This castle was newly established by Ogasawara Tadasane in 1619. Until then, the Ikeda clan ruled the entirety of Harima Province, but it was divided among several daimyo, with a new domain seat in Akashi, an important transit hub. On top of a ridge resembling a protruding tongue the Inari kuruwa, Honmaru (main), and Ninomaru (second) compounds run east to west, and there was also a harbor on the coastal side of the castle facing south on to the Akashi Strait. In the Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake of 1995, there was major damage such as stone walls collapsing, and restoration work was carried out.
