This castle was renovated by Araki Murashige in 1574. The castle site is on the Itami plateau extending towards the Inagawa River, with a sogamae (outer citadel) that makes use of undulations in the natural terrain within a range extending south-north 1.7 km and east-west 0.8 km, and the castle and surrounding castle town closely protected as a single unit. To the west of JR Itami Station, there is a historic site of the former main building, and visitors can see landmarks such as a stone wall containing Buddhist stones repurposed for building.

One can imagine the urgency of the rush to procure stones.
The use of stone items symbolizing religious faith heralded the arrival of a new era in castle history.

There was a kishitoride (riverbank fortress) here, and there are still the remains of a moat and earthen walls.
