Explanation

There are many topographic materials about Awaji in the Edo period (1603-1868), including Awaji So, Awaji Tokiwagusa, Kakiwagusa and Mijigusa. However, few of these include paintings of noted places and A Painting of Noted Places in Awaji Province (the fourth year of Kaei; 1851), compiled by Akatsuki Kanenari (Kimura Meikei), is the only widely known work of this kind. A Painting of Noted Places in Awaji, which is in our possession, is an original painting of noted places that is quite different from the former materials. Because the work contains no prefaces and afterword, it is unclear who produced it. A description about the year 1782 just suggests that the painting was created from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. On each cover a sheet of paper is attached with “Of the Five Volumes of a Painting of Noted Places in Awaji” inked on it. We chose A Painting of Noted Places in Awaji as the name of the material. It is disappointing that when the painting was backed with paper, the top and bottom parts were slightly cut.

The painting depicts a great variety of places, including temples, shrines, old castles, abandoned temples, noted places, historic spots and landscapes, and gives detailed descriptions of these across the two facing pages. There are also detailed descriptions of the names of halls, monasteries and small shrines and names of the geographic features. This content provides more than just an introduction of noted places.

(The Second Collection of Works in the Possession of the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of History, 1992, a piece of writing by Kenji Ogurisu was partially omitted)
