Explanation

Although sea route charts were used for navigation and for anchoring ships, this painting probably served ornamental rather than practical purposes. The painting depicts noted places and historic spots, including castles in coastal areas, with the right side depicting the area from Osaka Bay to Aki and Iyo Provinces in the Seto Inland Sea and the left side depicting the area from Suo Province to the Kitakyushu district. The distance of the sea routes and ports is shown in red. Many sailing boats are drawn in the sea and this folding screen is also of great interest as a maritime data.
