Samurai story
Shennong emaki
Shennong Emaki

A fun, imaginative story where Shennong, who is the ruler of agriculture and herbal medicine, gets rid of a monster by breaking wind. As the influence of “Shuten-doji” and “Momotaro” can be seen in the content structure, this work is thought to have been produced after the Edo Period. Shennong’s image transforms from one where he is a legendary ruler of ancient China to one where he is easily relatable to the audience.
