16　形式主語の　ｉｔ

　英語では主語に大きな要素が入るのを嫌う傾向がある。そのため大きな要素を it で置き換え、文の一番最後に置くことが多い。

(1) To play tennis with him is interesting.

　この文は文法的に間違った文ではないが、英語ではこのように場合、Toからhimまでをitで置き換え、文の一番最後に置くことが多い。不定詞以外にも動名詞や that 節に対応することがある。

(1’) It is interesting to play tennis with him.
彼とテニスとをするのは面白い。
(2) It is not easy to get rid of a bad habit.
悪い癖をやめるのは容易でない。
(3) It wouldn’t be any good trying to solve the problem.
その問題を解決しようとしても無駄だろう。
(4) It was clear that something had to be done.
何かしなければならないことは明らかだった。
