Explanation

Two scenes are confirmed in this work. The third screen shows Minamoto no Yoshitsune running down the Hiyodorigoe slope while the sixth screen illustrates Taira no Atsumori, who entered the sea on horseback, turning back as he is called by Kumagai Naozane. The folding screen depicts the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani in the Tale of the Heike. Many folding scrolls of the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani make pairs with the folding screen of the Battle of Yashima and this work can also be considered to be the right side of a folding screen of the Battles of Ichi-no-Tani and Yashima (one pair of six-paneled screens). There are many other examples of folding screen of the Battles of Ichi-no-Tani and Yashima, but this work is characterized by by a depiction from a high perspective, expressions of intersecting gold and gold clouds, and the depiction of soldiers on the whole screen. Examples of works with similar characteristics include works in the possession is Saitama Prefectural Museum of History and Folklore, Eisei-Bunko Museum and Tokyo Fuji Art Museum.

Depictions are delicate in detail and even gruesome scenes are depicted in detail. Because there is no name seal on the work, it is unclear who painted it, but it can be speculated that it was drawn by a painter of the Kano School. We sincerely hope that the left side of the work will be discovered.
