１　疑問詞 whose

　前期に学んだ疑問詞には what「何を」、who「だれが」、when「いつ」、where「どこで」、how「どのように」、why「なぜ」、which「どちら」がありました。今回は whose「だれの」を学習します。what, who, when, where, how, why, which と同じように、whose で始まる疑問文もyes や no では答えられません。

Who plays the violin?　　　　 　 （だれがバイオリンを弾きますか。）
- John plays the violin..　　　　 （ジョンがバイオリンを弾きます。）
What do you study?　　　　　　 （あなたは何を勉強しますか。）
- I study English.　　　　　　　　（私は英語を勉強します。）
Where does Kyoko live?　　　　 （京子はどこに住んでいますか。）
- She lives in Nagoya.　　　　　 （彼女は名古屋に住んでいます。）
Whose camera is this?　　　　　 （これはだれのカメラですか。）
- It is my camera.（＝mine）　　（それは私のカメラです。）

２　助動詞 can

　助動詞は、その名の通り、動詞を助ける働きをします。

I play the piano.　　　　私はピアノを弾きます。
I can play the piano.　 私はピアノを弾くことができます。

　この例では動詞の play を助け、単に「弾く」のではなく、「弾くことができる」つまり「弾く能力が　ある」という意味にまで広げています。助動詞の使い方で大切な点は、（１）動詞の前に置く（２）主語に何がきても助動詞の後ろにある動詞は変化しない（原形のまま）、ということです。

You play the guitar.　　　　（あなたはギターを弾く。）
You can play the guitar.　 （あなたはギターを弾くことができる。）

She plays the guitar.　　　 （彼女はギターを弾く。）
She can play the guitar.　 （彼女はギターを弾くことができる。）

３　助動詞 can の疑問文と否定文

助動詞 can の入った英文を疑問文にする場合は can を文頭へ動かす。否定文にする場合は can の後ろに not をつけます。このやり方は、be動詞の場合と全く同じですね。

＜疑問＞
Mike can play the piano. → Can Mike play the piano?
Your sister can play the piano. →　Can your sister play the piano?

＜否定＞
Jane can play the piano.　→　Jane cannot play the piano.
My parents can play the piano.　→ My parents cannot play the piano.
