Earthquakes and active faults

January,2001
Mr. Hideaki HIGASHIHAMA

In this section, there was a scientific explanation about "earthquakes and faults" from a lecturer. The main topics were about earthquake science, the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake, active faults in Japan, serious damage from previous earthquakes in Japan, Turkey and Taiwan and measures for disaster prevention, the continental-drift theory and plate tectonics.

-Student's impressions-

Looking at the active faults map of Japan, I realized we live in a dangerous area.

Studying the relationship between earthquakes and faults, I am more interested in the mechanisms of earthquakes and in how many faults were involved in the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake.

The most impressive words in the lecture for me were "the earth is alive" and "earthquakes are one of its activities". I totally forgot the fact that we are as if on the thin surface membrane of boiling milk.
