Community management through events

January,2002
Mrs. Rikiko SUGIYAMA, Officer at Takamaru Disaster Prevention and Welfare Community

In the Takamaru area, the damage was not so severe, however many people gathered at a shelter due to worry and loneliness. In the process of continuing the rescue operations, Mrs. Sugiyama encountered some greedy people who visited the shelters just to get the rescue goods for free.

After the earthquake, the facilities for disaster prevention such as a manual pump were enriched and training activities for the usage of the pump and a bucket relay are now adopted in community events such as sports meetings. In the boiled rice events in Takamaru, we were concerned about not generating garbage from the event itself by using real cups and chopsticks, not disposable ones. The motto in this event is "Let's offer not only a good taste but let's also be tender". The bonds that are fostered in the community events are strong and reliable in disasters. Our wish for the young is just to join more events in community.
