Activity of the traffic riot police in the Hanshi-Awaji earthquake

January,2002
Mr. Hidenori FUJIWARA, Traffic Riot Policeman, Hyogo Pref.

In the rescue operations of the earthquake, Mr. Fujiwara carried many dead bodies. The number of them was vast and the police could not accommodate them all in one place. When he came back to the police office, he was so sad to find out that one of his colleagues had passed away in duty due to the collapse of the police box. About 430,000 policemen from all over Japan joined in this operation because the shortage of policemen in the case of disaster is serious.

After the earthquake, he kept two things in mind. One is "We cannot tell when a disaster will happen. So we must try to be alert to cope with a disaster whenever it happens". Another is "We should build up a better society by completing our duties like cracking down on juvenile crimes and drug abuse as policemen, not only in the case of a disaster".
