The day the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake occurred

January,2001
Mr. Osamu MIYATA, NHK Osaka Executive Anchor Man.

When the earthquake occurred, I was preparing for the everyday morning news show "Good morning! Kinki". Just after finishing the practice reading of news scripts for the day, the earthquake broke out. NHK anchor men have to bring news to an audience as soon as possible. I hurried to the news studio and began the broadcasting. It was just 3 minutes after the earthquake. In fact, I had no idea about what kind of earthquake it was. All that I could do was just to compare with the previous earthquakes. We were able to get information from Nara, Wakayama and Kyoto, the major cities in the Kinki district, except for Kobe. Reviewing that situation, the most important information was that no information or response came from Kobe and I should have mentioned it.

In 1 hour or so, we got the surprising information from a viewer about the break down of the Hanshin Highway. At this moment, I realized how big the earthquake was and how important this broadcasting would be. After the broadcasting, I was exhausted and I was angry, thinking of the loss of so many people's lives. 6,400 people were killed and 10 trillion yen was lost due to the earthquake. This was much worse than the war. I would like to be a narrator of this tragic earthquake.
