Restoration of Daikai Station, the Kobe Kousoku Railway
Shinji INOUE, Engineering officer, Kobe Kousoku Railway Corp.
The moment the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake occurred, a lucky accident that could have ended in tremendous tragedy happened at Daikai Station. Just 1 minute before the earthquake, an express train left Nagata Station, and fortunately when the train passed through Daikai Station, the earthquake occurred. Even though the running train derailed due to the strong tremor, we had no severe injuries or fatalities.
Because the Kobe Kousoku Railway functioned like a highway "interchange" between Osaka and Kobe, we had to restore the railway system as soon as possible. Thanks to the around-clock restoration work and the corporation and understanding of neighbor residents, we were able to complete the restoration operation in 7 months, at first estimated to take a few years.
-Student's impressions-
From this seminar, I was able to think about the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake from a different viewpoint. I was surprised to find that many people were involved in the restoration operation. I would like to study not only superficial things but also detailed things.
