Restoration of waterworks after the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake

January,2002
Kenji MIYANE, Daikichi KAWAHARA.
Officer at Kobe Waterworks Department, Tarumi Center.

Due to tremendous tremors, serious damage was caused by the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake. In "Port Island", a landfill island off the coast of Kobe, liquefaction occurred. The other characteristic damages were torn-off water pipes from which we could easily imagine how tremendous the tremor was. Much damage was seen on the joint parts of water pipes.

Based on the damages, we are promoting the exchange from usual water pipes to earthquake-resistant water pipes and constructing 2 large-capacity water pipes that will be useful for urgent water supply and quick restoration in emergencies. We are also preparing an emergency reservoir system that will be useful for water supply and for extinguishing fires.

From now on we need to invest properly in waterworks with plans under the present stagnant economic situation. It is essential to talk with citizens and decide upon the project plans. To realize efficient investment, we have to continue the mutual cooperation relationships with citizens.

-Student's impressions-

Water is one of the essential materials of life. Ironically, through the hardships of disaster, we could recognize the importance of water. And we have no choice but to be involved in water and its problem.
