Restoration after the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake
Mr. Ryuichi HASHIMOTO, Officer at "Coop" Kobe Project Department.
After the earthquake, Mr. Hashimoto first made contact with the members of Coop Kobe. Then he began the supply operations of rescue goods. "Owing to the preparatory agreement with Kobe city for the assurance of necessities in an emergency, we were able to supply enough rescue goods to refugees and there were no riots. All that we had to reflect upon was that the rescue goods were not distributed efficiently and smoothly due to the destruction of traffic systems."
"In the rescue operations of Coop Kobe, we took the nutrients and demands of the refugees into consideration. We prepared fresh fruits and hot meals for them. Not only food, we cooperated for the supply of necessities in the temporary housing such as cooking instruments and bedclothes."
"For the members of Coop Kobe, it was the biggest joy that we were able to complete our rescue operations without any turmoil or riots. Through the rescue operations, we also were able to feel the importance of the mutual aid system between "Coops", the bonds with others, and the communication with our neighbors."
-Student's impressions-
Thinking of the earthquake, we did not have so much trouble in getting necessities and I found it was thanks to the Coop in my community. Thanks to the strong bonds of Coop, I think it was helpful for many people. I would like communicate with my neighbors and expand my bonds with others.
