Hyogo rescue support motorbike network

January,2002
Yoshifumi SUGIO, Representative of Hyogo Pref, Japan Rescue Bike.

In the rescue operations of the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake, we, Hyogo Rescue Bike, took an active part in gathering information and sending it to rescue headquarters and carrying medical materials and doctors to the places where cars could not go. In this sense, RB played a great role. But we also had some points to reflect on. Due to the shortage of members and lack of coordination between members, we could not make the best use of our mobility and speed.

Now we are tackling a system of cooperation between each RB branch in Japan.

-Student's impressions-

I was surprised that RB volunteers have jobs such as nurses and public officers.

I think it is wonderful to make use of a hobby as a way of doing volunteer work like RB volunteers. The number of RB members is still small in Japan but I hope it will increase and be an organization relied on by refugees in disasters.
