The environment and disaster mitigation course started at Maiko High School in April 2002, after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Disaster. It is meaningful to set the course at a school located in the disaster area as the center of the disaster mitigation education first in Japan. We learned a lot of lessons from the disasters so far but they were discussed only by the specialists in the 20th century. The citizens didn't pay attention to the lessons and thus were not prepared for the coming disasters. This is why many disasters continue taking place in everywhere in the world. The 21st century must be the age to cope with the disaster and mitigate it. It depends on whether we send our lessons to the world or not. It is impossible to person lives that suffer from an earthquake. In Maiko High School, the purpose to start the environment and disaster mitigation course is to send the lessons we learned from the Great Hanshin-Awaji Disaster to the world and make the citizens aware and prepared to cope with the disasters.

"About international exchange"

Our Environment and Disaster Mitigation Course had much opportunity. For example UN, UNCRD, JICA, and CODE so on. The United Nations World Conference on Disaster Reduction was held in January and Natural Disaster Youth Summit 2005 too. And we are took part in a sitting that. Additionally we have an exchange with Nepal in summer vacation. My friends went to Nepal last year and the year before last. I'm scheduled to go to Nepal this year. English is difficult. But I want to study it.

We valuable experienced Great Hansin Awaji earthquake. And we learned a lesson from this experience. One of the lesson is to regard life. Another one is to regard preparation. Hansin Awaji earthquake killed many many people for a little time. Why died many people for the one earthquake? They didn't think come earthquake. So They didn't prepare. Their house isn't an earthquake resistant design. Japan will be strong country for the disaster.

"My experience of Great Hanshin Awaji earthquake"

It was seven years old when we had experienced Great Hanshin Awaji earthquake. When I slumbered soundly, I woke up by violent sway. My room was black and electricity didn't go on. My room was so messy that there's hardly a place to step. Street was change a lot of debris.

Fortunately, my house got off was half destroyed but somebody lost their house. The whole my family was safety but somebody lost their family. We lost a lot of precious things.

During two months after the disaster, I lived in my grandfather's house. I entranced interim there and I commuted to the school. I made many precious memories. All of them were very kind for me and they mended my mind bruise. I think I got over the earthquake disaster by grace of them. I could feel kindness of many people. Then they give me many memories. These two months is my treasure.

I think earthquake disaster cause not only ill. If we lost our family and our house, maybe able to meet man never we stay out. We maybe notice that is precious ever we think natural things. Then like me maybe happen occurrence lodge of your heart your life.
