[Environment and Disaster Mitigation Course]

Maiko High school was established thirty-two years ago. But Environment and Disaster Mitigation Course was constituted four years ago. Our school has regular course and Environment and Disaster Mitigation Course. Environment and Disaster Mitigation Course is the only one in Japan. This course was constituted context in Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. This course's philosophy is "Think Global Act Local". We are study only disaster prevention but environment. Of course we are study liberal arts. Sometime we go to field trip.

We study to become disaster prevention leader in the future.

International exchange

Maiko high school concern international organizations -JICA and UNCRD. So we are student that we can have many chances speaking some foreigners. We and some foreigners divide some group and we discuss many matters about disaster and disaster prevention system and feature in country.

From 2000 years, some students go in Nepal Summer vacation. The purpose is educational exchange mishap with school in Nepal and to "way to build strong school in the earthquake" inspects, we announces earthquake experience and disaster prevention education.

From the great Hanshin-Awaji earthquake

We had the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake in the early morning on the day of January 17, 1995. It left great damage in Kobe. And 6436 people were killed by it. At that time we didn't prepare in ours mind against the earthquake and didn't have the knowledge about that. So we could hardly do.

From the great Hanshin-Awaji earthquake, we learned various lessons. For example it is important that we have to have the knowledge about disaster mitigation and do the preparedness against all of disaster etc. But isn't it the most important to obey these things.

Message

I think that nothing is more precious than life we learned in our course of disaster mitigation in this school. Everyone has his own life. If a certain person dies, he loses his life and his family and friends wept over his death. So we must do the Disaster Mitigation for less people feeling sad and save the life.
